Australian authorities have been taking precautions regarding the pandemic caused by COVID- 19. It has created a unique set of challenges for the government authorities, citizens, students and people working here on working visa. The Government of Australia has recently introduced a temporary visa known as COVID-19 Pandemic event visa (subclass 408) to allow non -residents working in critical industry sectors stay in Australia for an extended time. The critical sectors are health care, aged care, disability care, agriculture, food processing and child care.
An applicant can lodge this visa only if s/he is working in a critical sector and has 28 days or less remaining of the current visa or the last substantive temporary visa expired less than 28 days ago. It is possible to include the family members when lodging the visa application or any time before the visa decision is made. All applicants must meet the health and character requirements during the visa period. The work rights are limited to those who are granted COVID-19 pandemic event visa to continue working in the critical sector.
Basic eligibility for this visa is:

- Be in Australia
- Maintain adequate health insurance during your stay in Australia
Applicants working in a critical sector must:
- Have evidence from an employer of your employment or an offer of employment and that an Australian citizen or permanent resident cannot fill the position
- Hold a substantive visa that expires in 90 days or less, or your last substantive visa expired 28 days or less ago
- Maintain adequate health insurance during your stay in Australia
Applicants whose departure is delayed by COVID-19 travel restrictions must:
- Tell us why the restrictions prevent your departure
- Hold a substantive visa that expires in 28 days or less, or your last substantive visa expired less than 28 days ago

Applicants must select ‘yes’ to the visa application charge concession question in the application and select the ‘Nil VAC’ option.

- 8106 - Work limitation
- 8107 - Work limitation
- 8114 - Superyacht crew
- 8301 - Meet any outstanding public interest criteria
- 8303 - Not be disruptive
- 8501 - Maintain adequate health insurance
- 8502 - Not arrive before person specified in visa
- 8503 - No further stay
- 8516 - Continue to satisfy the criteria for the grant of the visa
- 8522 - Must leave Australia with or before the primary visa holder
- 8525 - Must leave Australia on the date specified
- 8526 - Let us know where you are living in Australia
